A city that seems to be in the early Showa period. A grand ceremony is held to celebrate the opening of the subway system, and the mayor and others who worked so hard to build it take the first ride on the train.

However, a mysterious monster strikes, and the mayor, a detective, the driver, a reporter, a widow, a girl, and a boy are gathered into the first car and locked in. While the mayor dies a strange death, a medicine man who claims to have come to slay the monster appears and searches for commonalities among the seemingly disparate passengers. Eventually, it is discovered that the passengers were somehow involved in the suicide of a female reporter, Setsuko Ichikawa, who jumped to her death a few months earlier. In order to slay the mononoke, or "monster, " which is a mixture of Ichikawa's grudge and the spirit of a cat, the medicine peddler further investigates the truth behind her death.

Also on board are Kayo, a young woman he once met during the Bakeneko riot; Genkei, a high priest with his disciple; Genyousai yanagi. A mysterious mountaineering ascetic; and Hyoe. Eventually, Genkei reveals that what turned this place into a sea of ayakashi may be the "Utsurobune" (a boat with no crew) that once turned his own sister into a human sacrifice.

It is a rainy night. Shino, a young and pregnant girl, comes to the Manya, a historic inn in a large and gorgeous building, and asks to spend the night. The inn is fully booked, but the old proprietress, Hisayo, lets her into a room on the top floor, which she says is unused for some reason. Shino reveals that she was kicked out of the house because she had a child with the young master of the store she was working for. Hisayo sympathizes with her, but advises her to give up the idea of having a child. Shino is then left alone in a large room, where she finds a mysterious child who has somehow entered the room. This triggers all sorts of bizarre phenomena, and a medicine man who claims to be here to slay mononoke appears to the frightened Shino and points out that the Ayakashi is in fact the Zashiki-warashi. The men are candidates for the son-in-law of the head of the family, Princess Rurihime, and are to decide who will be the winner in a kodo. When the other candidate, Zissonji, fails to show up, the medicine man takes his place and they fight over the Genji incense. As they wait for the results of the match, Zissonji is found brutally murdered in the next room, and Rurihime is found murdered as well.

The scene falls into a state of panic, but for some reason the men worry not about the princess but about the mysterious Todaiji. In order to obtain the fragrance, which is their real goal, the men fight with the Taketori no Kou (incense), but then the cry of Nue (a Japanese chimera) echoes. Ochoo, who married into the family of a feudal lord, is tried by the magistrate and sentenced to death for the murder of her husband and all his relatives.

In her prison cell, a medicine peddler, who was also being held as a criminal, appears. The medicine man asks if this is the work of ayakashi and if you really killed your family, but a masked man claiming to be an inquisitor appears and fights off the medicine man.

The masked man says that he is an ayakashi, but that he is in love with Ochoo and would like to celebrate with her. But the medicine man appears again and tells her that she needs to relive her life in order to find truth and reason and slay the mononoke (Nopperabo). The origin of the "Mononoke" series, "Bakeneko, " is now available in a new edition.
